1972
Mazda
Car Imports founded.
The Company, at its
peak, imported 30,000
Mazda vehicles a year
with a turnover of £300m,
through 150 Dealers.
1975
Polski Fiat/FSO importation
commences, eventually
growing to 8,000 vehicles
a year with a turnover
of £64m through
80 Dealers.
1982
Company changed its
name to MCL Group Ltd.
1983
Tunbridge Wells Mazda
becomes the Group's
first of four wholly
owned Mazda Dealerships.
1984
MCL Finance formed
- joint venture between
MCL and Lloyds/UDT,
current retail book
value of £150m.
1990
FSO distribution ceases.
1991
Kia distribution commences,
rising to 10,000 cars
a year with an £80m
turnover through 90
Dealers.
1995
Used car retailing
commenced under the
Autolink brand. Peaks
at 6 sites then consolidated
into 3 southern sites.
1999
Logistics business
expands under the Amethyst
brand with additional
warehouses, currently
1m sq ft.
2001
Mazda franchise reverts
to manufacturer.
2002
Kia franchise reverts
to manufacturer.
2003
Amethyst acquires
CPD logistics.
2004
Autolink re-branded
as Autoplanet.
MCL Group becomes
100% owned by Itochu.
W.Waters retail group
acquired.
2006
The Group operates
from 20 locations and
has over 800 staff.
